Alrightly, I have a friend who wants to run the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . He’s looking for something odd, no rust, and preferably manual to buy for $2000 or less to enter the rally. Anyone in the Great Lakes region know of any Lancias, Peugeot 505s, or other automotive oddballs that could meet the criteria? He’s able to wrench on cars so as long as it’s not a project car from hell, it’s worth looking into, but he prefers it to be running at the very least.

Oh man, Sault Ste. Marie? Peterborough and Thunder Bay are both much better places.
In terms of suggestions, I got nothing. Why not an AMC wagon if he can find one?

The answer is always Saab. https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/d/1999-saab-convertible-93-se/6483579483.html
Ok, I’d prefer a pre-GM Saab, but this is what came up in my no-effort search. Unusual, manual, with the bonus of convertible.

I am one of the guys. Looking for stuff that would get some good starter points. So playing it by year. Got loads of time to find a car. If nothing is found we will might just take the Probeable Cause Probe GT. Just keeping an eye out for the right car.

haha mmm that 2 stoke power. Found a pontiac tempest wagon with the 3.2 4 cylinder....aka a v8 cut in half. That plus the terrible torque tube and irs. What could go wrong.....alot.

Not a torque tube, “rope drive”. Torque tubes were used by lots of cars. “Rope drive” not so much.
There’s a convertible tempest for sale locally that is really tempting me.

Haha even worse. I bet that rope is a pile of mush at this point. Found this last night. Tag on the Mazda 5 is GA. So should be somewhat close. If its a 5spd could be a winner.

Also have another buddy who said there is one sitting abandoned around from work. But its in Illionis
the Oldsmobile 5.7 diesel wasn't nearly as bad as you've heard

Having done all the Lemons Rally’s to this point, let me give you some advice.
Do you want to win or do you want to have an awesome road trip?
Answering that question informs how you choose your car.
Winning a Lemons Rally requires driving thousands of miles in a car you’d be afraid to drive across town. Winning requires a high initial points assessment, which means the older, crappier, and more obscure it is the better. How much personal suffering are you willing to go through to amuse the judges? All for a trophy made from used car parts.
If you just want an awesome road trip, go buy what ever “I always liked those” car is in your budget.
Although I do highly recommend an MGB. Depending on its condition you might be able to thread the needle and do both.
